The Bonytail Chub

The Bonytail Chub is Native to the Colorado River Basin and the scientific name of the fish is Gila Elegans. The Bonytail Chub is part of the minnow family and has large fins with a streamlined body that helps it to swim in swift rivers. The fish is an omnivore, eating insects, plants, seeds, and crustaceans. Sometimes, the Bonytail Chub eats lizards and smaller fish. The Bonytail Chub, has been a critically Endangered Species since 1980, due to invasive species creating competition. The invasive species found their way farther downstream than before due to the creation of dams by humans.

Why the Bonytail Chub?

There are several different endangered species of fish in Nevada, but we are raising the Bonytail chub specifically. This is because it is one of the main fish being raised at the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery. Due to this fact, it would be more efficient for us to have the fish delivered because the hatchery is nearby. The hatchery also raises an excess of these fish.
